BOILERPLATE

The short version and the long version.

ONE SENTENCE

Expired is a household expiration tracker for web, iPhone, and Android that puts a live countdown on everything in the fridge, freezer, and pantry — capture an item in seconds by barcode, photo, date scan, receipt, or voice, and get a reminder while there’s still time to eat it.

ONE PARAGRAPH

Expired (expired.app) is a household expiration tracker built around one idea: know what’s going bad before it’s gone bad. Every item gets a live countdown, and the dashboard sorts the soonest-to-expire to the top, so the next thing to eat is the first thing you see. Capture is built for speed: scan a barcode, snap a photo and AI recognition names the item, point the camera at a stamped best-by date and it reads the ink, scan a receipt to log the whole grocery run, or just say it out loud. Households share one live inventory and shopping lists across web, iPhone, and Android, and push notifications land before the deadline, not after. Expired is built by Expired LLC, a one-person Texas company. It launches in 2026 in the United States at $4.99 per month or $39.99 per year, with a one-month free trial.

BOTH VERSIONS, PLUS THE FACT SHEET, ARE IN THE DOWNLOADABLE TEXT FILE.

THE STORY

Three angles that hold up.

01 · THE MONEY IN THE TRASH

The USDA estimates that 30–40 percent of the US food supply is wasted (USDA). For a household, that isn’t an abstraction — it’s groceries paid for at the register and carried out to the bin. Expired’s framing is unusually concrete for the category: it is not a meal planner or a diet app, it’s a countdown on food you already own. The app’s job ends where most apps begin — it simply makes sure the strawberries don’t die quietly at the back of the fridge.

02 · THE DATA-ENTRY PROBLEM, SOLVED WITH AI

Pantry trackers historically fail for one reason: nobody wants a second job typing in groceries. Expired attacks entry friction with five capture paths — barcode scan, AI photo recognition, an OCR scanner that reads the stamped best-by date off the package, receipt scan for the whole grocery run at once, and voice or plain-English entry where “opened yesterday, lasts two weeks” is a valid date. The design goal: logging an item should take less time than putting it away.

03 · ONE PERSON BUILT ALL OF IT

Expired is a one-person company. A solo, independent founder designed and built the entire product — the web app, the iOS and Android apps, and the deliberately retro-futurist “terminal” interface inspired by the instrument panels of the video game Prey (2017). It’s a kitchen utility that looks like a spaceship console, shipped by one person, launching in 2026.
